Etna volcano in Italy erupts, causing “rain of stones”

Mount Etna in Italy, the most active volcano in Europe, erupted on Tuesday, creating a lava fountain and sending feathers of orange smoke into the sky.

The eruption forced Sicily’s airport to close temporarily – which often happens when the volcano is active.

No injuries or deaths were reported.

Residents of the village of Pedara near the crater said they were throwing not only ashes, but also large pieces of volcanic stones all over the area.

“It was a rain of stones,” Letizia Olivieri told the Associated Press. “Something I’ve never seen in my life.”

The Sicilian village was in an emergency, the mayor said, while residents and municipal teams were working to clean the ashes on the street on Wednesday.
