A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shakes the northeast coast of Japan The world

TOKYO – A 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the northeast coast of Japan on Saturday, shaking the cities of Fukushima, Miyagi and other areas, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported. The quake affected southwestern Tokyo.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV said that the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant is still checking for problems and that there are no immediate reports of irregularities from other nuclear power plants in the area.

The agency said the quake had its epicenter about 60 kilometers (37 miles) below the seabed. The same area was hit by a tsunami, earthquake and nuclear disaster in March 2011.
