The sailors agree with Ken Giles, who is gone until 2022, for a 2-year contract

The sailors added another exemption, just for the moment. A baseball source confirms that the sailors agree to a multi-year contract with Ken Giles. The 30-year-old right-hander was operated on by Tommy John in October and is unlikely to launch in 2021.

Four positions in which sailors could sign for 2021

Giles came out of a 2020 season short of injuries, where he made only four appearances at the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing four runs.

In 2019, Giles recorded a 1.87 ERA in Toronto while winning 23 saves. A power pitcher, Giles ranked 98 percent in shot and whiff proportions in 2019, as well as the 94th percentile in speed, with a fast ball that averaged 97.4 mph and could reach 100. Also limited hitters to an average of .184 beats against.

The signing continues a speed trend in the Mariners bullpen by general manager Jerry Dipoto who acquired Andrés Muñoz from Padres at the 2020 trading deadline, re-signed Kendall Graveman shortly after the end of the season, traded for Rafael Montero by at the Rangers on Dec. 15 and signed Keynan Middleton on Dec. 16. The group has more in common than speed, as all four rescue agents also underwent surgery for Tommy John.
