Major League Baseball player Robinson Canó is being investigated in the Dominican Republic for possible irregularities in a garbage collection contract awarded to a company in his name.
The Directorate-General for Public Procurement (DGCP) reported on Thursday that it is investigating a contract signed between the town of San Pedro de Macorís, Canó’s hometown, and RJC Clear.
Canó realized the contract just five months after its establishment, when more than seven years of experience were required.
This, “along with the alerts received, justifies a further investigation” to “identify potential violations of the law and determine the legal consequences for the emergency procedure,” according to a DGCP statement.
In addition, in the process, “unreasonable deadlines were verified at all stages of the process, from receipt of tenders, as subsequent phases take place on the same day and with a difference of minutes”, contrary to what is established by the public. The law on procurement and contracts, the note added.
Canó is the second baseman for the New York Mets, was the 2009 World Series champion and just won the Caribbean Series with Aguilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican Republic.
The 38-year-old will not be allowed to play in the Major Leagues next season due to suspension, because he violated the anti-doping policy for the second time in his career.
