A former veteran New York Giants defender now has a coaching position with the Philadelphia Eagles.
No, it’s not Eli Manning.
Two days after defender Alex Tanney, 33, retired from the Giants, he returned to the NFL as an offensive quality control coach for the Eagles.
Although Tanney played only two games in the NFL, he had a nine-year career in the league, often taking on a mentoring role as a coach for younger players. He was a boss debut in 2012, when the new Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was the receiving coach.
The moment Tanney signed on the field was when he replaced Manning in the fourth quarter of a victory on December 15, 2019, the last start and appearance of Manning in his 16-year career with Big Blue.
Tanney will work directly under new offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who was responsible for the Los Angeles Chargers offense last season. Steichen also worked with Sirianni when the two were on the Chargers coaching staff a few years ago. Sirianni has been the Colts’ offensive coordinator for the past three seasons before being named head coach of the Eagles.
It remains unknown whether Jaylen Hurts or Carson Wentz will be Sirianni’s starting lineup. The Eagles would have pressed hard to change Wentz, but they did not receive any offers to their liking.
