On February 14, 278, in Rome, priest Valentine, sentenced to death for failing to comply with the marriage ban imposed by Emperor Claudius II.

In those times of bloody battles, Claudius wanted to form a great military force for his empire. However, difficulties in getting soldiers led him to assume that the Romans were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.

The emperor’s solution was drastic: he forbade marriages and engagements in Rome. Priest Valentin, in disagreement with the emperor’s unjust measures, continued secretly celebrating marriages.

After the discovery, he was arrested and sentenced to death. the sentence was executed on February 14: the priest was beaten to death and beheaded. After her death, Valentine was called a saint.

Legend has it that Valentine left a farewell note to the jailer’s daughter, with whom he had become friends, and signed it “From your Valentine.”
