Santo Domingo, RD.
Passenger entry into the country through the international airports of Las Américas and Gregorio Luperón de Puerto Plata fell by 51.1% percent in January this year, compared to the same period in 2020, a situation attributed to Covid-19 and are new species.
The company Aeropuertos Dominicanos XXL (Aerodom) pointed out in preliminary data that in the month of January 2020, 587 thousand 889 passengers were mobilized via Las Américas and Gregorio Luperón.
He added that in the same month of January, but in the current 2021, the number has dropped dramatically to the number of 287 thousand 728 travelers.
“This is a 51.1% reduction, which we consider to be very significant, due to external conditions,” the company said in a statement.
In the case of Gregorio Luperón International Airport in Puerto Plata, the cancellation of flights from Canada and other destinations to the country has had a significant impact on tourist entry through that airport terminal, according to preliminary data.
He also indicated that the Covid-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on commercial aviation in the country, as well as in other countries of the world, significantly reducing the number of flights and passengers, especially tourists.
Aerodom stressed that the situation in the passenger flow is expected to improve in the same way as the global effects of the coronavirus pass, a disease that has not escaped the Dominican Republic and is causing the death and contamination of thousands of people.
It has been calculated that from January 5 to January 31 this year, more than 760 flights would arrive in the country via Las Américas International Airport (AILA),
Operations were included in the terminal’s itinerary from Miami, Boston, New York and other destinations such as Mexico, Madrid and France. And an improvement was estimated in the influx of foreigners to the country.
However, the Covid-19 outbreak in many countries of Europe and other continents, and in addition to travel restrictions imposed by US authorities, has caused fear and anxiety in people to travel by air.
