Candidates for the Rock Hall: a list of 16 candidates

Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, Tina Turner and Iron Maiden are among this year’s nominations for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a strong female list of 16 artists, including for the first time The Go-Go’s, Mary J. Blige and Dionne . Warwick.

Artists are eligible for a nomination 25 years after the release of their first official registration. Jay-Z and Foo Fighters are among those who were eligible for the first time, while among the first to receive the first nomination are Blige, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Warwick and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Several candidates are looking for a second place in the hall. Turner will be incorporated for the second time, as she was already part of Ike & Tina Turner in 1991. Candidate Carole King has already been incorporated as a composer and this time she will perform as a performer. Dave Grohl, vocalist of Foo Fighters, is also now a member of Nirvana.

If elected, King and Turner would be the second and third female artists to be double-hired after the 2019 election of Stevie Nicks, who was already a member of Fleetwood Mac.

“This remarkable vote reflects the diversity and depth of the artists and music that Rock & Roll Hall of Fame celebrates,” John Sykes, president of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said Wednesday. “These nominees had an indelible impact on the soundscape of the world and influenced countless artists who followed them.”

Other nominees this year include Kate Bush, Devo, Chaka Khan, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine and Todd Rundgren. LL Cool J received the sixth entry and Chaka Khan the third as a solo artist.

2021 will be announced in May.
