A book club in New Mexico has changed speed during the pandemic – helping thousands of people in their community get vaccinated for COVID-19, a report said.
The 11-member group – called The Fabulous Ladies Book Club – became involved when a member’s husband, Dr. Stephen Rath, opened a vaccination clinic in the village of Ruidoso, KOB reported.
Rath began the operation after an employee of the state health department called for assistance.
“He said we don’t have anyone in Lincoln County who is willing or able to vaccinate the public,” Rath said.
She said they have vaccines to send us if we can or would like to open a vaccine clinic.
The book club joined in contributing to the promotion of the new site.
“There were a lot of attempts to put them there, to reach the people I knew, to get phone calls from 7 in the morning,” Alexandra Born told KOB.
“I had people texting me at 11:00 p.m. We all try to do complete work all the time, ”she said.
The work of the book club did not go unnoticed. After appearing in the Washington Post, they received praise from former First Lady Michelle Obama.
“Fabulous Ladies Book Club is an example of what is possible when people come together to help their community in times of need.” Obama wrote on Twitter.
“Their incredible organizing work has helped so many people in their city get the COVID-19 vaccine. The way forward, ladies! ”
