Golden Globe nominations could belong to Netflix

NEW YORK (AP) – Whether anyone will attend the Golden Globes in person remains uncertain and unlikely. However, the nominations for Globes 78 will be announced, however, on Wednesday.

Strange and largely virtual awards season in Hollywood she misses the usual kind of glamor and red carpet that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association celebrates annually. More than any other awards show, the Globes depend on a parade of stars – something that will not materialize when the awards are handed out on February 28 in a ceremony hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

On Tuesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said the Globes – usually a dinner party with drinks – will take place for the first time on the coast. Fey will host live from the Rainbow Room in New York, and Poehler will host the regular awards house, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Nominees are expected to appear from locations around the world.

Nominations will be announced at 8:35 a.m. ET Wednesday by presenters Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson. They will reveal 12 categories on NBC’s “Today” show, with full nominations announced live on E! digital channel and the Golden Globes website.

Without in-person projections or photos of celebrities, little is known about how the press association of about 90 members – a notoriously unpredictable group, in normal times – is faltering this year. But one thing can be a lock: Netflix will get a lot of nominations.

Some of the streaming service’s movies – including Spike Lee’s “Yes 5 Bloods”, David Fincher’s “Mank” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” – are considered leaders, as are Netflix TV series. “The Crown” and “Ozark”. “At last year’s Globes, Netflix also ran all the studios with 34 nominations.

They are also expected to be nominated on Wednesday for “Nomadland” by Chloe Zhao with Frances McDormand; Queen King’s debut “One Night in Miami”; and George C. Wolfe’s August Wilson adaptation of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” starring Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, but they certainly nodded.

Globes’ split of nominations between drama and comedy / musical could mean a wildcard of the season – “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” – could appear. The film could be nominated for best feature film, comedy or musical, along with acting for Sacha Baron Cohen (also a contestant for her supporting performance in “The Trial of the Chicago 7”) and Maria Bakalova. Also noteworthy in the category: the film “Hamilton”, ineligible for the Academy Awards, is probably nominated for Globes.

In the TV categories, you expect “Mandalorian”, “Queen’s Gambit”, “Flight attendant”, “Ted Lasso” and the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” to be mixed.

In August, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Lorenzo Soria, died at the age of 68.. He was replaced by Ali Sar.

This year’s globes have been postponed by almost two months due to the pandemic and to accommodate the late Oscars. These are set for April 25. Last year’s Golden Globes culminated with awards for “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.” The television, hosted by Ricky Gervais, could not remove the general rating trend for awards shows, attracting an average of 18.3 million viewers, down 2% from the previous year.
