Dominican Foreign Minister raises need for negotiations in Venezuela to lead to fair, free and transparent elections

Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez said the Dominican government’s desire to participate in all dialogue initiatives aimed at guaranteeing a negotiated solution to the Venezuelan crisis.

The Dominican Foreign Minister considered that international actors should contribute to creating the conditions for a dialogue between Venezuelans that would allow a return to constitutionality and respect for institutionalism. The diplomat’s remarks were made during his participation in the sixth ministerial meeting of the International Contact Group with Venezuela.

He stressed that, as the Dominican Republic supports the unity of the Venezuelan opposition, the international community must act accordingly to the unity of criteria in international organizations, especially before the Organization of American States (OAS), reversing decisions that militate against cohesion.

He considered it necessary to try to create the conditions for a practical negotiation that would lead to a solution to the crisis, by generating a process that would facilitate the necessary mutual trust between the parties and culminate in a fair electoral contest. , free and transparent. Elections with guarantees for all groups and political actors involved, with the support of the international community and in a climate of non-respect for human rights.

“For this reason, we understand that all Venezuelan parties must engage in a sincere, comprehensive, inclusive, credible and respectful national dialogue, which will contribute to a peaceful solution to the deep crisis that nation is experiencing. The Venezuelan people, directly, must be the only one with the power to determine the architecture of democracy and its leadership “, the diplomat underlined.

This ministerial meeting of the International Contact Group with Venezuela was the first in which our country participated after its accession as a full member, which took place on October 28, 2020.
