The left is taking to the streets in Brazil to demand the removal of Bolsonaro

Several demonstrations in Brazil’s main cities on Saturday called for an impeachment trial against the president, Jair Bolsonaro, a mobilization promoted by left-wing parties and organizations.

In Brasilia, the demonstration, mainly incited by the Workers’ Party and the Communist Party of Brazil, occupied an area ten kilometers from the Esplanade of the Ministries, according to Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.

The president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, took part in the protest in Brasilia and argued in her speech that an impeachment trial against Bolsonaro would not cause political instability. “Instability has been going on with this serious crisis,” he stated.

There have also been protests against Bolsonaro in Rio de Janeiro or Recife, while in Sao Paulo the demonstration began near the headquarters of the state legislative assembly and traveled the distance separating it from the city center.

In Belo Horizonte, the meeting took place in front of the Mineirão Stadium and in Salvador there was a parade of vehicles gathering about 500 cars.

Other opposition formations, but with a more conservative twist, such as the Free Brazil Movement (MBL) or Ven Para la Calle have called their followers for Sunday.

According to a study published Saturday by Folha de Sao Paulo, 40 percent of the population thinks Bolsonaro’s epidemic has been handled badly or horribly, compared to 32 percent in the previous survey conducted in December.

However, 53 percent of Brazilians do not think the Chamber of Deputies should initiate a process to criminally lift responsibility against the president.
