Health experts say that wearing a mask provides protection against COVID-19 for both the wearer and those around him. Now, CBS Denver reports, there is evidence that wearing two masks can provide even more protection.
The station’s medical editor, Dr. Dave Hnida, spoke about these reports in an interview with CBSN Denver.
“Research has confirmed that two masks are actually better than one,” Hnida said. “Specifically, what we’re saying is that two masks can actually be equal to the protection you’ll get from N-95 masks, which is considered the best mask that exists in the absence of a complete respiratory unit.”
He said wearing a surgical mask with a cloth mask on top provides an extra layer of protection.
“The reason for this is that you get more viral particle filtration. It becomes more of an obstacle course for the viral particle to go from the air into your nose and throat and then into your lungs.”
But Hnida warns that three masks can go too far, as this could interfere with the ability to breathe.
He pointed out that Joe Biden had “doubled” for several months, as had NFL game coaches.
“Even in our own family, when we have outside contact – no matter how limited – we double our mask,” said Hnida. “So the question is, ‘Is it effective?’ The answer is “yes” – and it’s something you may want to consider. ”
