The outgoing president of the United States, Donald Trump, left the White House on Wednesday as president together with his wife, Melania, in the presidential helicopter, Marine One, a few hours before the inauguration of his successor, the democrat Joe Biden.
Trump is heading to Andrews, Maryland, the military air base, on the outskirts of Washington, where he will celebrate a brief farewell ceremony with supporters and later board the presidential plane, Air Force One, for the last time to travel to his private club in Palm Beach, Florida.
The tycoon from New York thus violated the tradition and will not be present at the investiture ceremony of his successor.
Trump did not acknowledge defeat in last November’s election and continues to denounce, without evidence, “electoral fraud”.
With his departure from the White House, four turbulent, controversial years are coming to an end, in which he will go down in history as the first American president to open two dismissal processes, the last of which is pending in the Senate.
