KANSAS CITY, Mo – Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday he doesn’t know if Patrick Mahomes will clear the NFL’s concussion protocol in time to play next Sunday at the AFC Championship. However, Reid indicated that Mahomes could have felt good enough to return to Sunday’s divisional game.
After being struck and knocked to the ground, Muhammad rose and staggered for a moment. He then went for a brief examination in the secondary medical tent before descending quickly up a set of steps and then ran through the Arrowhead Stadium tunnel to the chiefs’ locker room.
“There was a chance back the day Patrick came back [the game]”You saw him running in the tunnel,” Reid said. By the time he got there, he was feeling pretty well. But you have to follow a certain protocol and that takes it out of the coach’s hand and the player’s hand and the doctor’s hand. ”
Mahomes was replaced in the third quarter by Chad Henne, who finished the Chiefs victory 22-17 over the Cleveland Browns.
The Chiefs face Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Arrowhead in the AFC title game. Reid said they will have a plan if Mahomes or Henne start with the quarterback.
“Because of the protocol, it’s a misunderstanding in terms of coaching,” Reid said. “You don’t have to think about that. Just go ahead and make sure you have an answer if it’s there and an answer if it’s not there. I can’t tell you medically. I do not know this. This is their decision and I am following it. ”
