Palm Beach County in Florida has begun looking for a way to end a contract with President Donald Trump’s esteemed International Golf Club this week.
The district attorney’s office confirmed to NBC News Friday that an official asked if Palm Beach has ways to terminate its lease with the president’s beloved West Palm Beach job.
The Palm Beach Post, which first reported that the county was investigating the lease, added that Trump is paying $ 88,338 a month in rent for the property.
Trump visits his titular International Golf Club, located in West Palm Beach unincorporated and county owned, during his visits to Mar-a-Lago, his Palm Beach estate. The president has been known to organize parties at the club; The course’s famous guests in previous years included Kid Rock and Tiger Woods.
Howard Falcon, Chief Assistant County Attorney, told the Post he does not believe the county has the legal standing to end the lease abruptly, saying his “initial reaction is that it would be a piece.”
A Trump golf course attorney added to the post that he had spoken to Falcon and concluded that there is “no ground to cancel the lease.”
The county’s move to cut ties with Trump came about a week after hundreds of violent rioters stormed Capitol Hill, leading to the deaths of at least five people, including a police officer.
The unprecedented attack on the Capitol has led to a national and bipartisan backlash from politicians across the political spectrum. The House of Representatives made history this week when it voted to impeach Trump a second time for his role in instigating or otherwise encouraging the riot.
President-elect Joe Biden, who will succeed Trump on Wednesday, has publicly rebuked the president’s actions, calling him “incompetent.”
While the impeachment process angered the president, Trump is reportedly more upset about the impact the riot has had on his corporate reputation and reputation in the golf world.
Multiple news outlets reported earlier this week that Trump was apoplectic after the PGA of America voted on Sunday to take the championship away from his New Jersey golf course next year.
“We are in a political situation that was not self-inflicted,” Seth Waugh, the CEO of the PGA of America, told the Associated Press. “We are fiduciaries to our members, to the game, to our mission and to our brand. And how can we best protect that? can be irreparable. “
A reporter for the New York Times wrote on Monday that, compared to his response to the impeachment lawsuit for him, Trump’s response to the PGA decision was ” [a] different order of magnitude. “
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday that the city would sever its own business ties with the president’s company after the riots. In a statement, de Blasio said New York is taking steps to end all contracts with the Trump organization, which consists of hundreds of companies owned by the president.
The organization has three contracts to make concessions in the city – the Central Park Carousel, the Wollman and Lasker rinks, and Ferry Point Golf Course – that will bring the company $ 17 million per year, according to The Washington Post.
“The president unleashed an uprising against the US government that killed five people and threatened to derail the constitutional transfer of power,” de Blasio said in a statement.
“New York City will not be associated with those unforgivable acts in any form, and we are taking immediate steps to end all Trump Organization contracts,” he added at the time.
