Cuban authorities announced on Tuesday that schools in several municipalities in the country, including those in Havana province, will close on Thursday to contain the spread of covid-19, which in recent days has shot back on the island.
Deputy Prime Minister Roberto Morales Ojeda reported increasing restrictions in the capital’s province, where more than 100 cases have been reported in the past two days, according to the Cubadebate news portal published on its website.
The official stressed that 34 municipalities in the country, including those in the province of Havana, will have greater restrictions due to the increase in cases and that measures such as suspending the school year will be implemented in them from Thursday, so that students can attend schools. this Wednesday to receive guidance and pick up their books.
Cuba recorded a low rate of infections, but after the Christmas holidays and the increased influx of tourists, cases grew rapidly with a record Monday of 487 people who tested positive and two died on weekdays.
In total, the island registered 15,495 positive cases and 155 deaths caused by this disease since the beginning of the pandemic in March last year, a much more favorable situation than that of its neighbors in the region.
The province of Havana has applied a number of restrictions since last weekend, such as suspending public transport at night, stopping buses to other provinces and limiting hours in parks and public spaces.
The Cuban government, which reopened its borders to foreign flights in November after eight months of closure, on January 1 again began restricting the entry of travelers from the United States, Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and Haiti.
In addition, on January 10, he began requesting a recent negative PCR test from all people arriving on the island.
