The presidents of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, and the president of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, have signed nine agreements pledging to tackle illegal migration and trade, maritime borders, sovereignty, health and more common to both nations that share the island of Santo Domingo.
In a joint statement as a result of their meeting last Sunday at the southern border, Abinader and Moïse pledge to take appropriate measures, each country on its territory, to implement state-of-the-art technologies that facilitate the elimination of illegal migration, trafficking and human trafficking, arms trafficking, drug trafficking and cattle theft, among other illegal activities.
“Work to obtain the necessary funding for the adoption of a training and support plan to facilitate the work of both countries to strengthen border security and surveillance; consequently, each country will cooperate with the other if the physical or technological controls are built on the entire land border, “they explain.
In addition, begin the process of identifying and registering in the Haitian civil registry all the citizens of that country, who are in the Dominican territory, and open the negotiation process to delimit the maritime borders between the two countries. This process will begin as soon as possible.
General hospitals
In the field of health, with the collaboration of the international community, which has shown its willingness to finance hospitals in Haiti, both leaders agree to cooperate in the construction of general hospitals in Haiti, located where the government of that country considers it. to reduce the intensive use of Dominican hospitals.
The two heads of state reaffirmed their desire to continue working in the priority areas of their respective countries, to exchange experiences, especially in these pandemic periods, and to strengthen cooperation and potential development opportunities.
Trade and energy
The joint statement proposes to continue negotiations in a sustained manner until a general trade agreement is concluded, in order to establish transparent, stable, fair and predictable rules for both parties and to stop smuggling that is eroding the tax base of both countries.
It also agrees to work closely to plan an energy interconnection matrix between the two countries, giving priority to renewable energies (wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric), which will allow the exchange of surplus energy from one country to another. .

It states that Haiti is immersed in a process of constitutional reform aimed at strengthening democratic governance and that the Dominican Republic, while respecting state sovereignty, encourages the Haitian authorities to work to ensure that this process respects the aspirations of the Haitian people.
