Stripe stops processing donations to the Trump campaign because of encouraged violence

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the news, and CNN confirmed the report with a source familiar with the matter.

Stripe restricts payments from “high-risk” companies, including those that “engage in, encourage, promote, or celebrate unlawful violence or physical damage to persons or property,” the website’s statement of restricted companies said.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump’s campaign paid Stripe more than $ 1.8 million in the 2020 election cycle, according to data from the Federal Election Commission.

Last month, Trump’s campaign and political operation reported that more than $ 207 million was raised between election day and early December, as he inundated supporters with emails and texts asking for donations to challenge the election results. However, an increasing portion of the money flowed to a leading political action committee that Trump set up to help fund his post-White House activities.

Updated figures on Trump’s most recent fundraising are not public yet.

Stripe’s decision follows a number of other companies that have cut ties with Trump or Republican lawmakers involved in contesting the counting of election results. Citigroup (C.), Marriott (MAR), Commerce Bank and BlueCross BlueShield are among some of the largest companies that have announced that they will suspend their PAC contributions to lawmakers who attempted to reverse the election results.
