The Maricopa County Republican Committee voted Saturday to disapprove of McCain, the Republic of Arizona reported, citing its support for “left-wing causes.” such as same-sex marriage, a larger government and “others contrary to Republican values”.

The resolution passed by a margin of 4-1 among 1,400 in attendance, according to the local NBC affiliate 12 News. The Arizona Republican Party said on Twitter that it will vote on a similar resolution when it meets on Jan. 23.

The disapproval comes as the Arizona GOP took losses in what appeared to be a relatively conservative state in the last two election cycles.

In response to the disapproval, McCain said on Twitter “I am a proud Republican for life and will continue to support candidates who put the country above the party and stand up for the rule of law. ”
