ROME – A giant pit opened on Friday in the parking lot of a hospital in Naples, Italy, forcing the temporary closure of a nearby residence to recover patients with COVID-19 as utilities were disrupted.
The operations were not affected at the Sea Hospital, and firefighters said no one was injured. Dolina consumed three cars in the otherwise empty visitors’ parking lot of the hospital.
The neighborhood of local hospitals said that the 20-meter-deep pit, 2,000 square meters (21,527 square meters), opened at dawn. Chief Firefighter Cmdr. Ennio Aquilino told Italian television channel SkyTG 24 that the implosion could have been caused by groundwater infiltration due to heavy rains in recent times.
At that time, six people were healing at home for patients with COVID-19. They were relocated.
The regional governor, Vincenzo De Luca, said that the residence will reopen in a few days after the restoration of the electricity and water service. Both were also discontinued at the hospital, but backup systems allowed care to continue.
“Honestly, we were also worried about the collapse of all utilities and the fact that the hospital’s activity could be endangered,” De Luca said. “Thank God, this did not happen. We had a power outage, but the electricity was restored and now we have no problem providing care. “
