Guatemala is preparing to stop the new caravan of Honduran migrants

TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS.-A new migrant caravan would still leave Honduras January 15th (as it transcends social media) and Guatemala calls for a plan to stop compatriots heading to the United States in search of the American dream.

“Caravan January 15, 2021. I left the terminal (bus) San Pedro Sula”, says the call that is already viral on Facebook and is not attributed to anyone in particular.

This would be the first caravan in 2021, on the eve of the inauguration Joe Biden, the new American president.

Guatemala is getting ready

The Guatemalan government has warned that it is preparing a strategic plan to stop people who do not meet the requirements from entering its territory.

“Given the possible formation of a caravan of migrants from Honduras, the Guatemalan Migration Institute informs that inter-institutional coordination will be carried out to implement a strategic plan for isolation, control, care and humanitarian assistance, “the Guatemalan Migration Institute said in a statement.

Requirements for entry into Guatemala:

-Covid-19 negative antigen test or PCR.
-Current passport or identification document
-Minors must present a passport and be accompanied by their parents.

Before March 2020, Honduran migrants said they were fleeing caravans from criminal violence and joblessness.

Now, as they claim in posting the call on social networks, the reason is the poverty derived from the covid-19 pandemic and the devastation after the storms Eta and Iota.
