Democrat Jon Ossoff declared victory in one of two Senate elections in Georgia on Wednesday morning. However, CBS News has not projected a winner in the race, although Ossoff is currently slightly ahead of his Republican opponent David Perdue.
“This campaign was about health and jobs and justice for the people of this state, for all the people of this state, and they will be my guiding principles as I serve this state,” said Ossoff.
Taking note of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Ossoff urged Georgians to “unite now to defeat it,” pledging to provide economic aid to both the state and the American people.
He also thanked Georgia for voting in the second election.
“Anyone who cast your vote, anyone who puts your faith and trust in democracy’s ability to deliver the representation we deserve, whether you were for me or against me, I will be for you,” said Ossoff.

The race between Perdue and Ossoff was too close to call from early Wednesday. Ossoff led with 50.2% of the vote compared to Perdue with 49.8%. A lagging candidate can request a recount under Georgian law if the margin is less than or equal to half a percentage point.
