We are all more than a little stressed these days. This is exactly what happens when the world is in the middle of a deadly pandemic that has changed everyone’s lives in so many ways. Perhaps our anxious and restless attitudes are troubled by Mother Nature, as it seems that squirrels have begun to openly attack the people of New York.
As reported by CBS-affiliated WCBS-TV, the squirrel attacks took place with astonishing regularity in a Queens neighborhood, with several people saying they got into physical altercations with the animals, sometimes leading to serious injuries.

The queen’s inhabitant, Micheline Frederick, says that a squirrel attacked her while she was standing. It looks like the animal got on its feet and started biting it. Frederick, who had bruises and cuts after the attack, said his fingers were “chewed” by the squirrel and refused to let go. When the animal finally gave up, the ground was covered in blood.

“We fight in the snow and there’s blood everywhere and my fingers are chewed and not let go,” Frederick told WCBS-TV. “Eventually, it stopped and there was a lot of bloody mess.”
And Frederick isn’t the only victim of the squirrel’s attacks. Other residents talked about the strange behavior of the animals, saying they tried to get on their feet several times and even jumping out of a mailbox to attack. A resident said she was just walking up her alley when a squirrel jumped on her and bit her arm. She managed to remove the animal from it before it caused additional damage.
It’s a really weird set of circumstances, and while your first thought might be that animals need to be angry, it’s worth noting that squirrel rabies is quite rare. The animals may be really angry, but they certainly won’t know until they can be caught. Meanwhile, some of those bitten by squirrels were treated for rabies as a precaution.
The victims of the squirrel attacks set a trap to catch the animals and move them, but at the time of reporting, none of the squirrels had taken the bait. For now, the locals will only have to be extra careful when they see one of the creatures or try to avoid them altogether. Maybe they’ll become a little friendlier once the year is over. After all, 2020 has been difficult for all of us.
