Quebec police arrest 2 and fine 6 for violating Covid-19 blocking restrictions at 7-party

A man is expected to face charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, Gatineau police spokeswoman Mariane Leduc said on Sunday.

A woman was also arrested for refusing to identify herself, but was released as soon as she complied, Leduc said. Police said the woman may be charged.

Two officers responded to a house in Gatineau on Thursday night, around 11:30 p.m., after receiving a complaint about a party, Leduc said.

She said two women answered the door and refused to cooperate with the officers. They failed to present their identity documents at the request of the officers, which is a crime, Leduc said.

There were six adults and a child in the house at the time, but current restrictions on Covid-19 in Quebec prohibit such gatherings. Leduc said a person living alone is allowed to join another family or, at most, receive a family member for the holidays.

A video made by someone else in the house was posted on Twitter on Friday and shows officers in a confrontation with a man on the doorstep. The screams are heard in the background.

Another man in the house can be seen trying to stop the man from being taken out.

Later in the video, officers are seen physically detaining the man outside the house, while reserve officers arrive and continue talking to some women inside the house.

Gatineau police posted on Twitter On Saturday, the video shows only part of the incident in which a man was taken out of the house and that “individuals were recalcitrant and refused to cooperate.” Police said the person arrested in the film attacked a police officer, hitting him in the face several times.

CNN CBC news partner reported on Saturday that the video was posted by Mathieu Tessier, the man who was arrested. Tessier told the CBC that he believes the police used excessive force. He denies assaulting an officer.

Tessier admitted to the CBC that he took a risk by organizing a holiday rally, but believed that if the authorities were called, he would only receive a warning and a polite request to split the party. “The police can’t do what they did to us. They treat us like animals, like criminals,” Tessier said.

Leduc said six adults were fined at least $ 1,000 ($ 1,546) for violating a public health law.

She said the man who was arrested was “accused” by officers and shot one of the officers inside the house.

No one was injured in the altercation and everyone was released on the spot after calming down, Leduc said.
