On Friday, December 25, the film “Soul” premiered, exclusively for Disney + users, which, although it is an animated film, due to its content and depth is more of a film of reflection and introspection for adults.
Pixar, as a film studio, offered the public valuable pieces from “Toy Story” in 1995, one of the most important films and loved by the public, which led them to produce a fourth installment of this saga in 2019. the emotional stamp that an animated film requires, especially for those of us who grew up with dolls.
Sometimes with slightly irreverent productions, such as the story “Brave”, a girl who does not fit into the mold of the Disney princess, because she does not want to get married or do her hair, or “Coco”, a movie about a loss of a person beloved, the latter able to move anyone.
But with “Soul” (or Alma in Spanish) Pixar went further. First using existentialist arguments, which deepen an analysis of human existence: What do I do with my life? Did I make the best decisions? I’m missing something, but how do I know what it is? Doubts that hit us all at some point in life.
This magnificent story focuses on Joe Gardner, a man with a passion for jazz and the journey he travels through the moments that marked his life. A musician who has lost his passion to be transported from the body and must find his way back with the help of a childish soul that finds out about itself, quotes the synopsis of the film.
On his way he meets 22, a soul who refuses to live on Earth, but Gardner shows him some of the wonders of life and ends up learning a lot from it. There are other characters like Joe’s mother who pressure her son to choose a new job.
Located in New York and with African-American residents. It is also a cultural and musical film and, above all, fun. Its director, Pete Docter, was a key figure for Pixar, in 2001 he made his directorial debut with “Monsters, Inc.” and in 2009 he directed “Up,” another thrilling film, and more recently, “Inside Out,” an emotion-focused film that won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Animated Film.
A fundamental pillar of “Soul” is the jazz music, piano and saxophone that transports us to those clubs where, for example, the great musicians of history, such as Louis Armstrong or Giuseppi Logan, appear. For the film, Jon Batiste wrote some original songs.
Another key point is the quality of the details. In a scene where Joe plays the piano, you can see real, perfect hands with an impeccable definition.
Pixar movies never go unnoticed and the audience (always loyal) is looking forward to their new releases. This is the first in the history of the studio, which did not premiere in cinemas, but in streaming, after the postponement of its premiere which was scheduled for June 19, 2020. It is, for many, the best film of 2020, a film you do not just want to see several times. The feature film leaves us with an open ending and more reflections. You were born to do something, but how do you know if you have chosen the right thing?
