The numbers released by Steam on New Year’s Day for the Linux market share of December 2020 showed a decrease of 0.33% to only 0.57%. This is a pretty big drop, but now Valve has updated its numbers and indicates that Linux continues to decline in percentage, but not as badly as originally reported.
After being 0.9% for November, Valve’s revised numbers in December 2020 put the Linux market share at 0.74%, or a decrease of 0.16%, but at least not the same significant, which pushed the size of Linux games to only half a percent.
Regarding the December drop, there are a number of opinions from Cyberpunk 2077 that raise Windows numbers (Cyberpunk can run on Linux via Steam Play, but with various bugs), an increase in Chinese users and sales of winter games , benefiting more from the Linux market share. There is also the issue of increasing the number of Steam users in general, thanks to Cyberpunk 2077 and also around the Christmas and New Year holidays, many having free time.
In any case, the Steam Survey results now indicate the percentage of Linux at 0.74%, while macOS is at 2.74% and Windows at 96.51%.
