Pope Francis condemns travelers fleeing COVID-19 blockades

Pope Francis on Sunday criticized travelers on holiday to get rid of the COVID-19 blockade, saying they care more about “fun” than the suffering of others.

Speaking during a video address at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, Francis said he read reports of people boarding a flight during the holiday pandemic elsewhere.

“They didn’t think about those who stayed at home, about the economic problems of many people who were severely affected by the blockade, about the sick people – just about going on vacation and having fun,” Francis said.

The 84-year-old Pontifex said his lack of compassion for others really “saddened” him.

“We don’t know what 2021 will hold in store for us, but what we can all do together is make more of an effort to take care of each other. There is a temptation to take care only of our own interests, “he said.

Francis’ remarks came after the traditional blessing of Angelus, which is usually given from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, but was moved inside to prevent crowds from gathering at the Vatican.
