New York State, which became the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the second quarter of this year, has surpassed one million infections after adding another 15,000 cases this Friday.
As announced by New York authorities on Saturday, a total of 1,005,785 covid-19 infections have been recorded since the start of the pandemic after a significant increase in the area in recent weeks.
The new cases of coronavirus have also accelerated in the past 3 days, when more than 15,000 infections were recorded daily, while the average number of positives in the past seven days increased from 5.5% on December 24 to 7.2% on December 31.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo pointed out that it is imperative that the population adheres to the measures so that the percentage does not increase further.
“We have a vaccine, and that’s good news, but it will take several months for it to reach critical mass, making it more important than ever not to be affected by coronavirus fatigue,” Cuomo said in a statement Saturday. . .
“The state works with the medical community all hours of the day, not only to ensure that vaccines are distributed as quickly as possible and in the most efficient way, but also to keep increasing the number of beds so hospitals are not overloaded . ”he added.
In total, 30,337 residents of New York State have died from the coronavirus, according to the region’s health department, while in New York City, an additional 7,000 are believed to have died of the disease, although they are not confirmed cases.
This makes New York the fourth state in the country to overcome the barrier of a million infections, after California (2.3 million), Texas (1.8 million) and Florida (1.3 million).
The United States has more than 20 million confirmed cases and is approaching 350,000 deaths from COVID-19, according to an independent census from Johns Hopkins University.
