A Canadian minister resigns after going on holiday in the Caribbean in the middle of the pandemic

Toronto – The finance minister of Canada’s most populous province resigned on Thursday after going on holiday in the Caribbean during the pandemic and apparently tried to hide the fact by posting on Twitter a video in which he is seen in a sweater next to a fireplace.

Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford has said he accepted Rod Phillips’ resignation as a minister hours after returning home from a two-week trip to St. John’s Island. Barts, despite government directives people do not travel unless absolutely necessary.

The Christmas trip was a bad decision and I apologize again.Phillips said in a statement confirming his resignation.

In a video posted on Christmas Eve, the finance minister is seen wearing a sweater while drinking egg drink by a fireplace and Christmas decorations.

“I want to thank each and every one of you for what we do to protect the most vulnerable,” Phillips said in a video to Ontario residents, who were cured of the coronavirus.

But, in fact, he has been enjoying a vacation since December 13 on St. Barts, a popular French island for the rich and famous, despite the fact that his Twitter account gave the impression that he was in Ontario.

Opposition parties and health officials have called for Phillips to step down. One party released a video of a call via Zoom, in which he is seen participating – also wearing a sweater – and an image of the legislature in the background, but it sounds like waves.

Arriving at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport on Thursday, he told reporters he had made “a stupid, stupid mistake.”

“I hope people understand that I’m the most disappointed,” said Phillips, who now has to meet a mandatory 14-day quarantine for those arriving from abroad.

Ontario set a new daily case record at 3,238 on Thursday.
