Medical students are in favor

The State Council of Medical Students (CEEM), in a statement sent to the press, celebrated the approval The draft law on euthanasia after drafting their position in his favor in October 2019, which brought them criticism from professional groups.

As CEEM reported, since its position in favor of euthanasia was approved in October 2019, it has been put “in the spotlight” by other medical associations and organizations., “because they did not understand how they positioned themselves in favor of the text, because, for many, it went against the principles of being a doctor“.

CEEM calls for medical students to receive more training on the topics that it surrounds the end of life and bets and defends the decriminalization of euthanasia. This group of students believes that people have the right to use their ability to make decisions according to their biographical project. In addition, they considered that, if a regulatory framework was approved, it should include in which situations this practice may be required to guarantee all patient rights and to legally protect medical personnel.

“December 17 will go down in history as the day Spain approved euthanasia. We, as students, request and must obtain more training on this subject, in order to inform the patient in the future about all the possibilities and to respect the principle of autonomy. I requested that this law include a number of criteria, such as the fact that the patient has full powers at the time of the decision, as well as the signing of a consent on his part, because he makes the decision freely and voluntarily, and as we have seen in the projects, the whole process is well explained, as we requested ”, says Ángel Benegas Orrego, President of CEEM.
