Dermot Farrell was born in 1954 in Garthy, Castletown-Geoghegan, Westweath Co, Meath Diocese.

He began his priesthood studies in September 1972 at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and earned a bachelor of science degree in philosophy in 1976. He earned a bachelor’s degree in divinity in 1979 and a bachelor’s degree in theology in 1981, both from the University. Pontiff. , Maynooth.
