On December 29, 2019, at the request of his daughter Gigi, Kobe went to the Staples Center to see Luka Doncic and the Mavericks against the Lakers and in the third quarter, he tried to play with the Slovenian’s mind.
When Doncic was on the side to serve, he looked away because someone said something in Slovenian and was surprised to see that it was Kobe. “Someone spoke Slovenian. He spoke my language. It was a big surprise.” Doncic said after the game
A week later, he spoke to ESPN about the episode if Kobe had insulted him.
“I can’t say. Or that someone spoke Slovenian, I turn around and see Kobe and I think “what the hell is going on?” Doncic remembered laughing.
Kobe’s “gift of languages” was well known, as he used to communicate in Spanish with Pau Gasol in the field, in addition to speaking Italian occasionally at the time. I learned Bosnian words to decree to Jusuf Nurkic.
This game between the Mavs and the Lakers was the last game Bryant saw in an NBA stadium, as less than a a month later he died in a helicopter crash in front of Los Angeles, along with Gigi and seven others.
