In recent years Switch has become a home to a wide range of quality ports on other platforms. Games from all corners have made the leap to Nintendo’s portable hybrid, including smaller mobile hits, cross-console releases from a few years ago, and more unexpected and recent multi-platform titles. 2020 was no exception, with some fantastic ports coming to the console, including scouring efforts such as DOOM Eternal and Or the will of the strands, excellent reorganizations of older games as well Xenoblade Chronicles and Metro sensitive remasters and custom adaptations as well Jurassic World Evolution and Hypnospace Outlaw.
For the past few years we’ve been looking at ports we’d love to see on the Switch, and it’s nice to look back at how many people have appeared on the console in one form or another. Below are just a few of the games we’d like to see on the Nintendo system over the next twelve months. Some of them are remnants of previous years for which we still crossed our toes and toes, while others are new releases, we think would perfectly compliment the Switch library.
There are still a few Wii U ports that haven’t made it to the Switch (which I’ve rounded up and evaluated elsewhere), though Super Mario 3D World enters February. We are also looking forward to the announced Switch versions of the indie classics Spelunky, Spelunky 2 and Braid in 2021.
Let’s take a look at the top ten port-based hopes for Switch in 2021, all but one that debuted on non-Nintendo systems.
All the boys
One of the hits of 2020, All the boys is a Battle Royale platform game that offered blockchain players a social outlet with its collection of fun chaotic mini-games. Our friends on the partner site Push Square loved its brand of colorful multiplayer chaos and “colorful multiplayer chaos” sounds sure to be right at home on a certain Nintendo console.
What are the chances?
Strong, I would say. Following an overwhelmingly successful release on PC and PS4, the Mediatonic developer played games while removing content and breaking bugs. Season 3 is live at the time of writing, so as long as the producers and publisher Devolver Digital can find the time to assemble a strong construction of the game for other platforms, we would imagine that the will exists even if the way in which it is a little cloudy at present.
A good FIFA game!
Zing! It got to the point where we simply got tired of the “Legacy Edition” treatment. If EA doesn’t invest in bringing the whole FIFA experience to the Switch, I’d really prefer it not to bother me at all.
What are the chances?
Thin depressant. We looked ahead to the short-sighted situation of the chicken and eggs in which EA worked and despite the fact that it supported the switch elsewhere with versions such as Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered and the future Apex Legends, clearly does not care about the comparative pocket change that must be made from an excellent Switch port, while FIFA Ultimate Team continues to earn millions elsewhere every week.
It seems that our best hope is for someone else to fill the football gap on Switch.
Outer Wilds
Yes, this appeared on our wish list last year and we still realize that on Switch. Not to be confused with the similar name The outside worlds (which made come to Switch in 2020), Outer Wilds is a mysterious FPS in the open world (spaces), which involves a repeated time loop of 22 minutes. As lovers of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s MaskWe are big fans of time loops, and the publisher Annapurna Interactive has a good track record of bringing games to Switch.
What are the chances?
As I said last year, Outer Wilds is built in Unity, and its stylized art and solitary exploration would work well on Switch. The biggest problem against it is the workload for the Mobius small developer team and 2020 is unlikely to help in this regard. However, we are still full of hope.
Bugsnax
One of the highlights of the year for Playstation owners, Bugsnax is a delightful first-person insect hunting adventure with a surreal (and marginally horrible) edge Pokémon Snapabout it. If nothing else, his captivating song from Kero Kero Bonito is worth the price of admission and we would love to hear it on Switch.
So, are we talking about Bugsnax on the Switch?
May be. The Indie Young Horses studio could have signed up with Sony to make Bugsnax an exclusive release for PS, but, as far as we know, there is nothing to prevent the game from coming to other platforms at a later date. Performance has been a bit hectic on the PS4, but given the proper care and attention, a Switch version is within the limits of possibilities.
It’s hard to say that his colorful creatures wouldn’t fit very well on Nintendo hardware, right? Also, Nintendo gamers can’t get enough of catching catalogs of cute creatures.
Person 5
There is a fantastic library of JRPGs on Switch and Joker’s inclusion in Super Smash Bros. last it made us believe that Person 5 on Switch was a simple formality – maybe a release of Person 5 Royal with additional content? But no, next April will mark the fourth anniversary of the game in the West and Persona 5 is yet not available on a Nintendo system.
Yes, yes, we get it Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers, a Musou crossover (and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity came out very well), but does not replace the original style of dripping. Come on, Atlus!
What are the chances?
10%? Err …, 90%? He feels like a madman, but I gave up trying to identify Atlus and the parent company Sega on things like “logic.” Remember, Persona 5 came out on PlayStation 3, so Switch could “fix” P5 very well. If you don’t take out a Switch port, it feels like Sega is leaving a lot of money just sitting on the table.
