“I met with Dwayne this afternoon and informed him that we would release him,” Washington head coach Ron Rivera said in a statement.
“I told him I think it’s for the benefit of both sides that we’re going the separate ways. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions over the last two seasons and we want him to move forward.”
Haskins was sacked during Sunday’s loss by Washington to the Carolina Panthers.
His demotion followed a tumultuous week in which Haskins lost his role as one of Washington’s captains and was fined an undisclosed amount for violating Covid-19’s protocols.
Washington downgraded and fined Haskins after the team was informed of posts on social media showing the 23-year-old without a mask while attending his girlfriend’s birthday party.
Haskins was the team’s first round in 2019 and 15th overall.
The former Ohio State University quarterback apologized to his team last week for his actions in the virus protocol, saying they were “immature and unacceptable.”
Haskins addressed Monday’s launch on his private Twitter account, according to ESPN and numerous other outlets, saying he “took full responsibility for breaking the standards of an NFL QB and will become a better man and player because of that experience.” .
Washington closes the regular season this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles with the hope of a place in the playoffs still alive.
