Los Angeles County residents receiving a COVID-19 vaccination can add a digital record of their vaccination to the Apple Wallet app, Bloomberg.

The county is partnering with Healthvana to add vaccination proof to the Wallet app on the iPhone. Healthvana is a platform for patients that healthcare providers can use to provide patients with COVID-19 test results.

The vaccination file helps to ensure that those who have been vaccinated receive a second shot in the two-dose procedure in the future, Bloomberg speculates that it could be used as evidence of vaccination to access flights, concerts and more.

For now, the Wallet vaccination file will warn people who received the first shot about the second meeting to make sure everyone is fully vaccinated.

“We’re really worried. We really want people to come back for the second dose,” said Claire Jarashow, LA’s director for controlling vaccine-preventable diseases. Bloomberg. “We just don’t have the capacity to make hundreds of medical records to find the first doses of people and when to take the second.”

Immunizations are also tracked in the registers and vaccinated people receive a paper card, but that card is easily lost, so the Wallet application serves as more permanent evidence.

The county plans to send data to Healthvana every night, with information stored on Amazon Web Services’ HIPAA-compliant servers. Jarashow said Bloomberg that it is as “safe” as possible, and that “it would feel comfortable to use it.”

As of Dec. 22, Los Angeles has administered at least 38,850 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to health care providers, long-term caregivers, and paramedics.
