Horacio García-Rojas: Working with Clint Eastwood is a life lesson

Mexican actor Horacio García-Rojas will take part in Clint Eastwood’s new film, “Cry Macho”, a dream he never thought could come true and from which filming comes “a life lesson”, beyond of film learning.

“(Eastwood) is one of those people who continues to be there because passion calls them. They decide to keep telling stories because that’s what they are passionate about and what amuses them. Although I have years of experience, I still have a way. to go and I want to reach 70 with that vitality “, said the actor.

EASTWOOD ANTAGONIST

“Cry macho” is the 42nd production of the 90-year-old American and tells the story of a man who was a rodeo star and helps a young man with problems to enter Texas (USA) from Mexico.

In the film, García-Rojas, the star of the series “Diablero” and actor in “Narcos: México”, plays the antagonist of Eastwood, who, in addition to directing the film, plays in it, after a casting.

“Castings are always great because they throw a coin, but you put your whole heart into it, beyond talent, especially now in a pandemic,” he said.

Along with him, Eduardo Minett and Natalia Traven complete the Mexican team of the film directed and starring Eastwood, who usually has new talents in his films.

“It has a community service, let’s say, understanding that the art of cinema is a chessboard in which each piece fulfills a vital function and all are important and have generated a family,” said García-Rojas.

The pandemic brought bad news to the Mexican when a big Amazon Studios project in which he was to participate with the Spaniard Javier Bardem was canceled and, although the blow was hard, “Cry macho” helped him maintain his illusion.

In addition, he focused his energies on his daughter’s education, spending time with family and consuming culture.

RACISM IN MEXICO

Regarding the circumstances of Mexican culture, García-Rojas considered that 2020 was an important year to open the door to change on issues such as racism, classism, humor, generating heated and, some of them, constructive debates.

“There is a long way to go, but there have been some flashbacks about the intention to change the narratives. Sometimes it seems to end, but you go on the platforms and see posters that tell you “this story is very Mexican”, but why are they all white? Mexico is not like that, “he said.

In addition, he referred to certain films that, according to him, perpetuate the ways of making films that contribute to stereotypes, such as the film “Nuevo Orden” (2020) by Mexican Michel Franco, which divided the audience, as some considered it classist. and racist.

For García-Rojas, things will really start to change when the population begins to question their privileges and begins to see how, from their position, they can contribute to extending these privileges to the entire population.

He also defended the idea of being able to tell stories about the real Mexico that he and many other people live in their day.

“Sometimes it seems that Mexico and Latin America are uncertainty, desolation, drug trafficking and banal comedy and I say, where is the Mexico I know? The Mexico of my laughing daughter, the Mexico of the wife I love, of my parents who support me, of the pyramids, of the magical cities “, he claimed.

In 2021 García-Rojas hopes that projects that have been left halfway through the pandemic will continue with what he is excited about, including a project on racism in Mexico with illustrator Raúl Valdés.
