Morocco’s foreign minister is urging Biden to keep Trump’s agreement

Morocco’s foreign minister is urging the new Biden administration to maintain an agreement with President Trump to establish relations with Israel, according to a report.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said the agreement, which was sealed by Trump in early December, will be a step towards resuming diplomatic relations with Israel, Axios reported on Wednesday.

The agreement stipulates that Morocco agrees to establish relations with Israel in exchange for US acceptance to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

“We hope that the next administration will continue this positive dynamic and feed what we have built because it was made for peace,” Bourita told Axios. “What we have here is a package that has been signed and the first commitment that everyone has made has been to defend, promote and update this package.”

Morocco and Israel are worried that the agreement will fall apart if President-elect Biden intends to withdraw it after taking office in January.

Biden has not publicly stated whether or not he agrees with Trump’s consent.

Trump called the agreement a “massive discovery” that would bring peace to the Middle East.

“Another HISTORICAL discovery today! The two GREAT friends of our Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations – a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East! ” the president wrote on Twitter on December 10.

Morocco joins Bahrain, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates to abandon decades-long hostilities against Israel, hoping to stabilize the Middle East and North Africa.
