The European Bureau of the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Tuesday a meeting of its members to discuss strategies for testing, reducing transmission and communication on the coronavirus strain that has emerged in the United Kingdom.
“Restricting travel to contain the spread is prudent until better information is available. Supply chains for essential products and essential travel should remain possible, “WHO-Europe Director Hans Kluge said on his Twitter account, which did not disclose a date for the meeting.
Several European countries have temporarily closed their borders for travel to the United Kingdom because of the strain, which seems to be transmitted “more easily”, although its severity is not yet clear, according to Kluge.
“Increasing prevention measures is crucial,” the head of the WHO’s European office added.
Three days ago, the British government tightened restrictions on the movement of people from London and the south-east of England due to the alarming increase in covid-19 cases, that experts link to a new highly contagious variant of coronavirus.
