The voice of the village has entered new property and will be relaunched starting next month, New York Times reports. In accordance with Times, the publication was purchased by Brian Calle, the current owner of LA Weekly and executive director of Street Media. Calle intends to relaunch The voice of the village digitally in January 2021, following quarterly references sent at the beginning of the year.
The voice of the village officially closed in 2018, almost a year after the launch of its latest printed issue. Calle acquired The voice of the village from owner Peter D. Barbey, who bought the publication in 2015 from Voice Media Group. In addition to purchasing the paper, Calle hired Bob Baker, a former editor for The voice of the village, as a senior editor and content coordinator. Calle told him Times that he hopes to bring former staff back on board.
Buying Calle de The voice of the village comes about three years after he acquired it LA Weekly (also from Voice Media Group) – an event met with much controversy. After Calle’s purchase of the publication, nine of the 13 editors at LA Weekly they were fired, a boycott ensued, and Calle and others LA Weekly supporters were hit with a lawsuit from David Welch, who claimed the newspaper was mismanaged. The suit was solved in 2019.
