Kansas City bosses signed quarterback Le’Veon Bell earlier this season, hoping he could offer a production when incumbent Clyde Edwards-Helaire needed a break.
Bell’s role could be more than that, after Edwards-Helaire was helped off the field with what the Chiefs called hip and leg injuries during their 32-29 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Coach Andy Reid said at the post-game press conference that X-rays are negative and it is unclear how long he will miss Edwards-Helaire.
Edwards-Helaire was bent back as he was approached after a 4-meter run in the fourth quarter.
“It was an ugly way to approach it,” Bell said.
Bell had his busiest and most productive game since joining the bosses. He transported 15 times for 62 meters and scored a touchdown of 12 meters after taking an option from defender Patrick Mahomes.
Muhammad had crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing at Bell.
“Knowing Pat, I knew he would throw the ball anywhere on the field,” Bell said. “That piece was really a fun piece. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a piece. I know I’ve probably never had an easier touchdown in the NFL.”
Bell’s game was part of a rushed 179-yard performance by the Chiefs, the best of them since winning Week 6 over Buffalo Bills.
The bosses (13-1) may have to rely on Bell if they repeat that kind of rushed production soon.
“It was a big plus,” Mahomes said. “He played when he was in the football game. Obviously, we hope Clyde will be back soon, but I think we have good guys in that back room who will step up and really embrace that role.”
