The sequel to “Wonder Woman 1984” grossed about $ 38.5 million at ticket offices abroad, Warner Bros. reported Sunday.
The film that starred Gal Gadot began international screening last week, opening in 32 markets, including China, and on more than 30,000 screens. More than 6 million people participated, the study said, and positive reviews are mostly good.
Most of the revenue came from Chinese cinemas, where it grossed about $ 18.8 million. However, this was not enough to take first place in the country, as a local film did.
“Wonder Woman 1984” will not be released in US theaters until Christmas, when it will debut on HBO Max. The pandemic forced studios like Warner Bros. to accept unconventional release plans as long as the films reach the public.
Initially, “Wonder Woman 1984” was supposed to open in cinemas around the world this summer, but its release date was rejected again and again. The first film earned over $ 821 million globally in 2017, and if it weren’t for the pandemic, there is hope that the sequel – which costs about $ 200 million – will surpass that total.
Warner Bros. tried various strategies with his films this year, including launching “Tenet” in theaters and sending “The Witches” directly to HBO Max. Finally, last month, the studio decided to release “Wonder Woman 1984” in both theaters and HBO Max.
