Masahiro Sakurai teases Super Mario RPG fans with a tribute to the Culex fight in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with Geno Mii suit

Although the Star Spirit known to Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom as “Geno” has ever really appeared in a single game, he has somehow accumulated the following. As such, many believe that Geno deserves a place on Super Smash Bros.’s ongoing list. Ultimate. Of course, there are a lot of people who don’t think that this one-time miracle should have a place over other iconic video game characters that haven’t been featured yet.

Regardless, it seems that the debate over Geno’s chances has been put on hold for the time being. Now that the Geno Mii costume from Smash 4 has returned to Super Smash Bros. Ultimately, Geno now seems unconfirmed. This was a pretty discouraging blow for those who really loved Geno’s character and wanted him in the game.

Masahiro Sakurai recently posted a picture directly from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on his Twitter, which is a clear homage to Super Mario RPG. In the movie, we can see Sephiroth playing his Final Smash against Bowser, Mario and a Gunner Mii dressed in Geno Mii costumes.

In the Super Mario RPG, there is a secret boss fight that makes the player fight an enemy known as “Culex”. Although Culex is an original character in the Super Mario RPG, the battle is meant to simulate a boss fight in a typical Final Fantasy game. Even compared to the final boss, Culex is considered to be the most difficult battle in the game

The characters that can be played in the Super Mario RPG are Mario, Mallow, Geno, Bowser and Peach. As such, Mario, Bowser and Geno can be a possible team that the player uses during the Culex fight (or any fight once Bowser is unlocked).

In the image uploaded by Sakurai, Sephiroth in his final form of boss, Safer-Sephiroth, seems to take on the role of Culex in the recreation of the iconic scene. Safer-Sephiroth and Culex have many similarities in terms of appearance.

Funnyly, this image serves as a teasing reminder to fans that Geno has been denied for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The closest we’ll ever get to playing Geno outside of the Super Mario RPG game right now is with this Mii suit – except for a certain hack for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, of course.
