Suspect opens fire in Milpitas mall and shoots a man

A suspect opened fire at the Great Mall in Milpitas on Saturday night, shot a man and sent crowds of frantic shoppers in search of cover, police said.

Authorities responded to the scene at 5:16 PM after reports of a shooting outside of Old Navy, Milpitas Police Department Lieutenant Tyler Jamison said. Jamison would not say anything about the victim’s condition or the suspect’s whereabouts.

“At the moment we are not releasing any more information,” he said. “We will make sure that everyone is sheltered until the agents have completed their investigation and search.”

Shortly before 9:00 PM, Milpitas police said they had evacuated the mall safely.

“ALL CLEAR, teams have completed their search for the mall interior,” police tweeted. “Anyone who took shelter on the spot has been safely taken out. There were no additional casualties in connection with this shooting.

“There were two unrelated medical emergencies during evacuations that required medical transport to a local hospital. Detectives and Field Evidence Technicians remain on site and are actively investigating this incident. Currently, there are no ongoing threats to the community. “
