The head of the Chicago Brotherhood of Police Lodge 7 could be fired over a number of inflammatory posts on social media.
At Thursday’s monthly meeting of the Chicago Police Disciplinary Board, it was decided that John Catanzara would face a probation hearing to determine whether or not he would keep his job.
Catanzara is accused of making seditious and profane posts on his Facebook account between November 2016 and February 2018.
In one post, he claimed to have killed people. In another, he referred to Muslims as “savages” and suggested that they should be shot.

Catanzara also posted a photo of him in a police uniform making a political statement (pictured), which is a violation of the department’s policy.
There are 17 posts cited in the review request document provided to the Police Commission Office.
In a post, on November 22, 2016, Catanzara supported the killing of people by stating: “Wtf its [sic] It’s time to kill these moms.
The officer claims that this comment referred to the Americans who killed police officers, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
In another post, dated January 22, 2017, he referred to a member of the public, writing:[T]the stupidity of people like her just proves the saying … most of it dripped on mothers [sic] foot.’
Just eight days later, Catanzara described the Muslims as “Save, everyone deserves a bullet.”
On December 15, 2017, he posted a photo with him in uniform, making a political statement, which violates the department’s policy.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Catanzara was one of the most frequently disciplined officers of the department before becoming president of the union.
Since becoming an officer in 1995, he has been the subject of 35 complaints, has been suspended several times and two past police superintendents have tried to fire him on various occasions.
Sydney Roberts, the chief administrator of the Civil Liability Office (COPA), has called for Catanzara’s dismissal.
Meanwhile, police superintendent David Brown suggested he be suspended for a year.

The Chicago Police Council said Catanzara (pictured), the head of the Brotherhood Order of the 7th Chicago Police Lodge, will face a probation hearing.
Their disagreement triggered a trial in which a member of the police council, Andrea Zopp, was randomly elected to review the case and made the decision on the evidentiary hearing.
The case will then be decided by the other eight board members at a future date.
“The moment is beyond suspicion. It was played by a disciple Rahm Emmanuel who was supposed to be “random,” Catanzara told WGN-TV in a statement.
“Our members have not received any correctness from COPA or the Police Council for several years. To think I will have a fair hearing is beyond ridiculous.
COPA praised the decision of the meeting and said that it hopes to end the shooting of Catanzara.
“The officer’s behavior has expressed bias and animosity toward various minority groups, which is particularly problematic in a city as diverse as Chicago and has a negative impact on the Department’s ability to effectively serve its residents,” Ephraim said.
