9 nuns die of COVID-19 in the convent of upstate New York

Nine nuns at a New York convent died of COVID-19 in just over a month.

The nuns lived with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in Latham, according to the Albany Times Union.

“Four of the deaths associated with the congregation were reported earlier this month by hospitals,” Albany County Health Commissioner Elizabeth Whalen told the newspaper. “The other five were not reported to the Albany County Health Department by the unit.”

The monastery is home to about 140 nuns, according to its website.

On December 11, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet said 22 of the sisters tested positive for coronavirus, according to a note obtained by NBC’s WNYT affiliate.

In December, eight nuns from a Wisconsin convent died of COVID-19 complications in the same week; four of them dying on the same day.
