MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Dozens of people found out this week that a mistake was made with the first COVID vaccines, and now I don’t know what’s next.
Dick Cecchini received his dose Tuesday at a Hy-Vee pharmacy in Mankato, more than an hour from his home in Lakeville. He received a phone call from Hy-Vee the next morning, informing him of a problem.
The pharmacy says that 62 patients received the first doses of Pfizer vaccine which was diluted with sterile water instead of the saline solution provided by Pfizer.
“We do not know anything. Hold on tight. We will get our hands on you “, Cecchini remembers.
He learned Friday that there was no cause for medical concern. Questions remain about how Cecchini and the others will be protected by COVID.
“The first shot, is it good?” What happens after the second shot? Do you have the same coverage? Cecchini said.
Hy-Vee doesn’t know yet. Cecchini personally contacted Pfizer. He says they don’t know either.
“If Pfizer doesn’t know, who knows?” Cecchini said. “I’m in the language.”
Hy-Vee says that whatever the outcome, the 62 patients will not have to look for or wait for another meeting.
“I am quite tolerant of mistakes, because I am old and I made a million. How fast do you solve it? Cecchini said.
The Minnesota Department of Health says the 62 patients are unlikely to have to begin vaccination cycles. MDH is awaiting confirmation from Pfizer and the CDC.
