According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the San Francisco 49ers restructured the Weston Richburg center’s contract, creating a $ 6.875 million salary cap. Rapoport adds that the offensive line veteran is likely to retire.

The move offers 49ers nearly $ 32 million in salary cap space, according to OverTheCap.com. Of course, this does not break with the two-year, $ 10.1 million agreement recently agreed by defender Emmanuel Moseley, as the structure of the contract is not yet known.

San Francisco originally signed Richburg on a five-year, $ 47.5 million contract on March 14, 2018 and began 15 games in his first season with the team. The center suffered a ruptured patellar tendon during week 14 of the 2019 season, landed on the injured reserve and missed the last stage of the 49ers’ Super Bowl race.

Richburg started the 2020 season on the reserve / physically-incapable list and did not appear in a game. He had several operations since the injury. In addition to knee surgery, he underwent shoulder surgery, which was credited for his failure in 2020. Most recently, he underwent hip surgery.

This is the second time the 49ers have restructured Richburg’s contract to create a salary cap. The team has done this before, in December 2019.
