Macy’s has notified employees in about 45 department stores that it will close by mid-this year, CNBC reported.

The closures are part of a previously announced plan by Macy’s to close 125 locations by 2023, which the retailer pointed out in February last year.

“As previously announced, Macy’s is committed to redefining our store fleet by concentrating our retail locations in the desired and well-trafficked A and B malls,” a spokeswoman for CNBC said in a statement.

“To that end, we announced today several store closures that are in line with the recommendations we offered in February 2020,” she said. “These closures bring us closer to making the right mix of mall-based stores.”

Liquidation sales have already begun in some locations, and the rest are set to begin later this month. CNBC could not immediately get a list of about 45 locations.

Macy’s operates 544 of its stores of the same name, along with 34 Bloomingdale locations, 19 Bloomingdale outlets and 166 Bluemercury stores, according to its website.
