4 victims, suspect killed after shooting in Chicago and Evanston – NBC Chicago

Four victims were killed and two others were injured in a shooting that began in Chicago on Saturday and ended when police in Evanston shot the suspect in a shootout, authorities said.

The suspect was identified as Jason Nightengale, 32, Chicago police chief David Brown said.

In the first incident, at approximately 1:50 p.m. in block 5300 of South East End Avenue in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, the suspect entered a parking garage and shot dead a 30-year-old man sitting in a vehicle.

The victim was a University of Chicago student, officials confirmed.

The suspect then went to block 4900 of South East End Avenue at approximately 2:00 PM, where he entered an apartment building and fatally shot a security guard, police said. The perpetrator also shot a 77-year-old woman who collected her mail in the building.

About 45 minutes later, the suspect went to a building on the 5000 block of South East End Avenue, where he pulled a gun at a man he knew and stole his vehicle, police said.

The perpetrator proceeded to block 9300 of South Halsted Street, where he robbed a supermarket and shot a 20-year-old man. A second person in the establishment, an 81-year-old woman, suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to the Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.

According to Chicago police, the perpetrator assaulted a 15-year-old girl who was driving with her mother in a vehicle at block 10300 of South Halsted Street at approximately 5:00 PM. The girl is said to be in a critical condition at Comer Children’s Hospital.

After that incident, the suspect returned to the scene of the shooting and shot the police, hitting a Chicago police vehicle.

At approximately 4:45 PM, the suspect entered a CFS pharmacy in Evanston, announced a robbery, and then fled to a nearby IHOP restaurant where he shot a woman in the head. According to Chicago police, the woman died of her injuries.

The suspect was injured after a shooting with Evanston police officers. He was then taken to AMITA Health Saint Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Evanston Police Chief Demitrous Cook said.

Police had no information on a possible motive late Saturday, Brown said. No officers were injured in any of the incidents, authorities confirmed.

But to the brave Evanston police officers who confronted the suspect, many more people would have been injured, Brown added. “We should take our hats off to Evanston PD and the hard-working Chicago Police Department …”
